Every hard hat sold in the U.S. for occupational use is governed by
ANSI, the American National Standard for Industrial Head Protection. The standard defines two separate classification systems that are often confused with each other: structural Types (I and II) and electrical Classes (C, G, and E). A hard hat carries one designation from each category. For example, a hat might be labeled
Type I Class E or
Type I Class G. Understanding both systems is necessary before you can make a compliant and informed purchase.
Structural Types: Top Impact vs. Full Coverage
The structural type tells you how much of the head the shell is designed to protect from impact.
Type I hard hats protect the top of the head only. The shell and
suspension are engineered to absorb and deflect downward force. This covers the most common falling-object hazard on a
construction site and is the standard for the vast majority of general industry and construction work. Most cap-style and full-brim hard hats are
Type I.
Type II hard hats add lateral impact protection. The shell includes additional foam or lining material that also absorbs side blows. These are required or recommended for work in trenches, confined spaces,
utility climbing, or any environment where the risk of a lateral impact is significant. The

Electrical Classes: C, G, and E
The
electrical class rating tells you the level of electrical insulation the hard hat shell provides. This does not protect against step potential or contact through the body. It specifically addresses the insulation value of the shell material itself.
Class C (Conductive): No electrical insulation. These hard hats are often made from aluminum or vented thermoplastic. They are lighter and cooler in hot environments, but they must never be used where electrical hazards are present. Common in mining, foundry work, and outdoor environments with no overhead power.
Class G (General): Tested at 2,200 volts. This is the most common hard hat class in general
construction. It provides meaningful protection from incidental electrical contact at lower voltages, which is sufficient for most jobsites without energized high-voltage equipment.
Class E (Electrical): Tested at 20,000 volts. This is the required class for
electricians, linemen,
utility workers, and anyone working near high-voltage equipment or overhead lines.
Class E hard hats must be made from non-conductive, non-metallic materials and should never have metallic accessories added.
